Biography
Based in rural Devon, Liz (Lilly) is an active member of the Visionary Arts Community, is a published author and a practicing 'Life Coach' (www.lilybetoracle.com). She was born in Sao Paulo, Brazil and has also lived in Uraguay, London, Saudi Arabia, Surrey and Hampshire.
Lilly took a Foundation Course and studied photography at the West Surrey College of Art and Design in the late 1980’s. Professionally Lilly has been painting and sculpting since 1999, although it has always been part of her life. Her paintings have been sold worldwide; she has been featured regularly in Glastonbury for the past year and exhibits in London. She is currently planning showings in Totnes, America and Canada.
Lilly has been running performance workshops for young people throughout Somerset and Devon as well as regularly facilitating educational workshops for regional artists.
Lilly's work is an expression of her sense of 'purpose'; and the purpose is best acknowledged in her ability to help others to release their 'fear base' in order to open one's heart to Universal Love. Here we are reminded that we are collectively 'One' and in being unified we are connected on a multitude of levels.

Statement
A contemporary painter, Lilly captures her subjects in our world with an abstract slant. She exposes a subtle world of feeling into a visible format using colour, texture and form as a language tool to convey her thoughts, emotions, feelings and imaginations on to the canvas. For the full benefit of their subtleties the pictures are best viewed in real life as it is difficult to capture these qualities in photography.
Her work taps into the collective memory; a place where we are all connected. Due to the volatile nature of our times it is a common experience to feel stress and uncertainties; her most recent body of work are various statements of 'Light at the end of the Tunnel'.
Lilly is working on her newest body of work right now. It is about Conscious Awareness, the inter-Galactic Journey of our lifetime. This body of work includes 'The Messenger' Series (an Angel Warrior) and
the ‘Soul People Series’ where Lilly has captured our unseen magical world of mind, body and spirit. The circle is very significant. It represents a myriad of things. It is an ideogram of the one, the wholly good towards which the human spirit aspires. It is about totality and eternal continuity, union as well as containment and wholeness. There are no divisions. Celestial spheres. These souls use their tails for movement, which also correlates them to sperm, the giver of life.
Many agree that we are currently experiencing a time of 'portals opening' astronomically. For the past 20 years we have been looking through 'windows' of the computer world; but currently we find the opening of doors (Portals). What is in store for us? The answer to this may relate to how we have expanded our Consciousness!
Have a look at Lilly's work and share the visions of art as a therapeutic healing and self-exploration tool. People find that her paintings are an enjoyable adventure. There is no single way to view them, everyone tends to see what they need to see in the moment they experience the adventure, and this can lead to very interesting and often healing experiences.
Lilly will accept commissions. Please contact her directly to discuss what you have in mind.
Weekend Art Courses
The following art courses are offered in 2008. All art courses are suitable for complete beginners as well as those with more experience who want an art course to develop new skills and approaches. These art courses have a maximum of just ten places per art course so you can be sure of the attention and support you need to succeed:
- Painting with Acrylic - an art course to master this unique medium.
- Art from Imagination - an art course to help paint beyond reality.
- Sculpting in Clay – a sculpting course to begin using this unique medium.
Lilly Shewan has a reputation for being a calm, fun and inspirational art tutor. She has taught many professional artists as well helping complete beginners to get started. As an art course tutor she is especially known for sharing her passion for painting with acrylic as well as teaching sculpture techniques. Her aim on each art course is to help people discover and develop their own style using imagination as a source of inspiration for art.
When choosing an art course one important consideration is the total number of participants. With Lilly the number on her art courses is never more than ten which means you receive the individual attention and support you need to really succeed. Getting good art tuition matters most and with Lilly you have one of the best. She firmly believes in helping people discover and develop their own approach to creating art, whether this includes realism or abstract, figurative, landscape, still life, etc.
There are four weekend art courses on offer during 2008, with more to follow in October, to be confirmed at a later date. Each weekend art course takes place at the splendid venue of Hockworthy Hall situated in glorious countryside near to the borders of Somerset and Devon. There are many nearby places to stay if required.
Each art course is led and taught by Lilly Shewan - a professional artist and tutor with nine years experience. Lilly has taught painting and sculpture to many individuals including complete beginners and many others already working as professional artists. For some a weekend art course is all about getting started. For others it's a chance to explore new directions and techniques. Because each course has only a maximum of ten participants you will be sure to receive lots of individual tuition and support and therefore really get the most out of the weekend.
On each weekend art course basic materials and equipment are provided so please speak to Lilly to discuss your requirements. A delicious lunch of home made soup and sandwiches each day - all included in the fee. You have no hidden extras to worry about and can spend the whole time focussed upon enjoying and getting the most from your art course.
Each weekend art course is suitable for complete beginners as well as those with more experience who perhaps wish to extend their abilities or seek new directions. The emphasis on each weekend is to help you develop your art individually rather than follow any set programme or regime.
Painting with Acrylic
As a painting medium Acrylic offers maximum flexibility. Mixed with water it paints like watercolour or use straight from the tube for an effect like oils. Learn how to develop layers of paint to enrich colours, create depth and consider aspects of composition along with other elements to make a successful painting.
Two weekends to choose from:
19/20 April 21/22 June October dates TBC
Art from Imagination
Although similar in many ways to the weekend painting course the emphasis is all about creating work from your own imagination. You will be helped to find inspiration from a variety of sources including dreams, meditation, others artists, literature, photographs, etc. You will have the chance to learn the basics of painting with acrylic but will also be encouraged to explore alternative perspectives and compositions perhaps introducing mixed media and collage.
Two weekends to choose from:
7/8 June 12/13 July October dates TBC
Sculpture (dates to be confirmed, please register your interest with Lilly)
Whether you are completely new to sculpting or already have some experience this course spread over three separate weekends will help you master the basics of working with clay. Expect to produce a piece of work that will be ready for firing. Lilly Shewan knows these techniques very well. She has demonstrated and taught the techniques to complete beginners and experienced sculptors. If you want to learn about the basics of working with clay this course is for you.

'I was lucky enough to be able to purchase the Spirit People from the Art for Life Auction last winter. It is possibly one of the most beautiful and inspiring pieces of art I have come across. It is so absorbing, I find myself gazing at it endlessly - it must have been very hard for you to part from it! Thank you.' R Ker
